OK, this is easy enough. Use a chimney or an electric starter. If you've been using lighter fluid or instant-light briquettes, just stop now and never talk about it again.

Chimney: load the bottom with 3-5 pages of loosely crumpled newspaper, load the top with coals, light the bottom and give it some room (shit's about to get really smokey). Dump the coals into the grill when the flames are coming out of the top, and there are no pieces of charcoal without red on em.

Electric lighter: stick it in your grill, dump coals on it, plug it in, wait for smoke and flames, take it out and don't burn yourself with it (you should pull it before the entire pile has caught fire, you'll have to judge it).

Here is a DOPE chimney lighter trick: Get your 3-5 pages of newspaper ready to load your chimney. Then drizzle a little bit of cooking oil onto your newspapers and rub it around so it gets on all the sheets. Guaranteed ignition on the first try. I think about a 1/2 a tablespoon works best.
I got that trick from a kinda hippy-looking guy at a friend's bbq. I forgot your name, whoever you are, but thanks.
